Fire Alarm Safety

Smoke alarm detecting smoke in a house at night.

Smoke Alarms Save Lives. Seconds Matter.

When fire strikes, every second counts. Working smoke alarms provide the early warning your family needs to escape safely. A simple commitment to proper installation, regular testing, and maintenance can mean the difference between life and death.

Protect your home. Protect your family. Be prepared.

Test Your Smoke Alarms Monthly

Press the test button on every smoke alarm once a month. If it doesn't sound, check the battery or replace the alarm. A working smoke alarm gives your family time to escape.

Replace Smoke Alarm Batteries

Make your birthday a reminder to replace smoke alarm batteries. Replace batteries sooner if the alarm chirps. For sealed 10-year alarms, replace the entire unit when needed.

Install Smoke Alarms in the Right Places

Install smoke alarms inside every bedroom, and on every level of your home, including the basement. Proper placement provides early warning and gives more time to escape.

Replace Smoke Alarms Every 10 Years

Smoke alarms wear out over time. Check the manufacture date on the back and replace alarms every 10 years, even if they still sound when tested. Don't wait until they fail.

Never Disable a Smoke Alarm

Never remove batteries or disconnect an alarm to stop nuisance alarms. Instead, improve ventilation or relocate the alarm according to guidelines. Keep your family protected.

Choose Interconnected Smoke Alarms

Interconnected smoke alarms provide greater protection. When one detects smoke, every connected alarm sounds, warning your home at once, giving more time to escape.
